Easy 5-ingredient chocolate graham cracker toffee
Christmas is in two days. Christmasisintwodays!
Two.days.
I was all set to write a real, borderline-wordy (aka typical) blog about this toffee. Toffee that I planned to make two weeks ago. Had I done that and posted it shortly thereafter, you could've made it and included it in your tins of Christmas cookies to family and friends.
Gulp.
Last minute homemade toffee is better than no toffee at all, right?

Friday Five: Food with friends
Friday Friday, there you are! Sort of snuck up on me this week, actually. How about you? Has it been a busy week or a quiet one? Regardless, I hope it's been good -- full of holiday preparations and time to be thankful for all of the blessings in our lives.
Speaking of holidays and being thankful, I want to say thank you for sticking with me this week while things have been a little quiet on the blogging front. The reason I've been so unplugged is because my sister and her fiance are in town for a week. Who has two thumbs and is soooooo excited? This gal!
Three months ago, Jenny and Zach moved to Sacramento, CA, because he got an incredible job offer. While our family is so proud of them (and loving the pictures of their weekend trips to national parks!), we've missed them terribly.
Rather than make two very short visits (with lots of travel time) for back-to-back holidays, they made the smart decision to return home for a full week between the two. We hopped around the city earlier this week and have been relaxing at our parents' house since Thursday. Cozying up in front of the fireplace, playing Scattegories, and enjoying thefruits cookies of my mom's holiday baking = the best. There really is no place like home!
Family, friends, and food -- isn't that what the holidays are all about? Bypass the crowded malls, give the postman an Amazon break, and save your fingers from becoming wrapping paper casualties. (My Band-Aid count is up to 2. Please tell me I'm not the only one who sustains such "injuries".) Rather than stress about what to buy, why not channel your energies to dreaming up what indulgent dishes to make? You know, the ones you've bookmarked, Pinned, or dreamt up and saved for a special occasion? Here are five of my favorite food-centric ways to get together with the ones you love.
Happy weekend and, for us, happy early Christmas! :)
1. Progressive dinner - Coordinate with folks who live relatively close to one another and each offer to serve up a different course in succession. Wine and appetizers at the first stop, salad and/or bread at the next, then the entree, and dessert. This is a great way to give everyone a chance to host and show off their holiday decorations. Fun fact: according to Wikipedia, the UK is home to the idea of a safari dinner during which "the destination of the next course is generally unknown by the participants, and they have to decipher a clue before moving on." Fun!

68 Christmas & holiday cookie recipes
As of Saturday, the fall/Halloween/Thanksgiving decorations are packed away until next year. By last night, the Christmas decorations were up and the tree was trimmed. And tonight? Tonight, Official Holiday Baking Season begins!
Last week, while helping my mom bake pies for Thanksgiving, we started talking about cookies. We fantasized about all of the cookies we plan to bake this year: both old favorites and new recipes that have caught our eye throughout the year. And then how we'd enjoy them: eating, mailing, sharing, exchanging, you name it. Is there anything more fun than cookies to make? No, sir!
Food is love, and what better way to spread love than to gift cookies and treats to those near and dear to you! Whether you're planning to bake cookies for everyone on your nice list or simply make enough to take to a holiday party, there's something for variety of sweet tooth here.
Happy baking!

Christmas morning eats
Two days and counting! Better saddle up for one last trip to the store to pick up the necessary ingredients to make a special breakfast or two, be it on Christmas morning or another day over the holiday break.
Do you have any special Christmas morning breakfast traditions? For as long as I can remember, we've always had cinnamon rolls, oranges, and coffee/hot chocolate. We wake up slowly, nibbling and drinking and chatting, as my dad builds a fire in the family room.
It's funny to think how we rushed through this tradition when we were younger and now that we're older, we take our time -- so much so that my mom sometimes has to remind us to start opening gifts! My 10-year old self would be shocked.
Wherever you find yourself on the 25th, I hope you have a festive and delicious start to the day. Sweet and savory, here are some of my favorite breakfast recipes suitable for kids from 1 to 92 :)

Friday Five: Cookbooks to gift
(Obligatory reminder of how many days are left before Christmas and onset of self-induced panic after looking at one's ever-growing to-do list.)
Ha-appy Friday, everyone! Hope you're having a great week and taking time to enjoy the special moments of the holiday season, however big or small they may be. The brief 5 minute bursts of hanging ornaments (does your tree take days to decorate like ours?) or Christmas episodes of your favorite TV shows are just as important as the lavish parties and gift exchanges. Any time together with people you love is time well spent, right?
All of that being said, I take special pride in being a really good gift giver and want to spoil those on my list with things they'll really enjoy. There are few better things than seeing someone's face light up when they receive a surprise they love, right?
I won't pretend to have all the answers to your shopping and gifting conundrums, but I will offer up a few more suggestions for the food-minded person on your list. Whether he/she is a rookie or an expert, these cookbooks are some of my favorites, new and old, and are for real people who cook real food.
This Friday Five is all about good resources for good recipes and great food. Bon appetit!
1. Martha Stewart Baking Handbook - The owner and head baker of a local bakery recommended this book to me years ago. When I asked him about going to culinary/pastry school, he told me to save my money and bake my way through this book because it would teach me "everything a baker needs to know." Best advice to date! If I could only recommend one book to an aspiring baker, this would be it.
2. Barefoot Contessa Foolproof - My love for Ina knows no bounds, and her latest offering only confirms my adoration. Reliable recipes, satisfying meals, and easy entertaining are the hallmarks of Ina's food philosophy. I especially love her tips for planning a party, down to a table layout and timeline leading up to the meal. Lists are a host's best friend!
3. The America's Test Kitchen Cooking School Cookbook - Like Martha's book, if I could only recommend one book to an aspiring cook, this would be it. America's Test Kitchen doesn't assume that the reader knows everything and provides hundreds (maybe thousands?) of helpful photos. Recipes for all skill levels and appetites.
4. Michael Symon's 5 in 5 - I once thought Chef Symon was only capable of making fancy and complex dishes from watching him on Iron Chef, but learned his cooking can also be incredibly approachable and downright easy. He's one of my newest food crushes, thanks to his new show The Chew. This book has been a savior for weeknight dinners in our home!
5. The Pioneer Woman Cooks: A Year of Holidays - If Martha is the queen mother and Ina the queen, Ree is absolutely the princess in cowboy boots, new to the royal food court. I'm a regular reader of her blog and can't get enough of her show on Food Network. I think the reason she's become so successful is because she cooks what we really want to eat! Hearty dishes that can feed a small family or a big crowd come together with helpful shortcuts and her signature wit. Summary: I love this book so!
Bonus: Cookbook holder - Matt got this for me a few years ago, and I can't tell you how useful it is. Keeps cookbooks open and protects them from flying batter and sizzling oil!

Merry Christmas!
Last year at this time, Matt and I were on our honeymoon... on a cruise ship... in the middle of the Caribbean ocean. I can't believe it's been a whole year. While we had such an incredible and unforgettable trip, I've gotta tell you how much I'm looking forward to our first Christmas together in our home. Send all of your snow our way, please!
From our home to yours, wishing you a very merry Christmas, full of love, warmth, happiness, and delicious dishes! :)

Friday five: Holiday breakfast
TGITWBC - Thank goodness it's the weekend before Christmas!
Okay, I'll admit that doesn't have quite the same ring as "TGIF", but I couldn't help myself. Weeks of watching Christmas movies have me adding a little holiday cheer to anything and everything. Even yesterday's eggy breakfast looked positively dashing with green spinach and red peppers.
While we woke up in western PA, we went to sleep in eastern PA. Matt and I made the drive to Reading last night to spend a long weekend visiting with his family. We'll be making merry and spreading joy there through Monday before making the (hopefully snowy!) drive back to Pittsburgh on Christmas Eve, clad in our flannel pajamas and singing along to Matt's Christmas tunes mix. I cannot tell you how genuinely excited I am for thesleigh car ride!! I've even promised to stay awake for the entire thing and be a good passenger/wife. Any bets on how that goes?
I know that Matt's parents, like so many others, are really looking forward to a house full of people and have already planned so many fun activities for all of us. I thought it'd be a perfect time to share with five of my favorite breakfasts to please a crowd and give them all the energy they'll need for days full of house calls, shopping, skiing, and, well, feasting!
It's my Friday five: holiday breakfast edition!

1. Breakfast apple granola crisp -- Because the smell of apples and cinnamon make the whole house smell so cozy and welcoming, right?! Curl up with a bowl of this and top with some vanilla yogurt first thing in the morning (or, ahem, ice cream for an afternoon snack).

2. Sausage kale breakfast strata -- If it was satisfying enough for a pack of hungry football fans tailgating on a cold fall morning, it will surely please a house full of eager kids and adults, ready to tear into a pile of presents! All of the prep can be done up to a full day before cooking, and any leftovers you might have will reheat wonderfully.

3. Sour cherry coffee cake -- Sour cherries hold such a special place in my heart because of family tradition, and I think your family will love this, too! A light fruit coffee cake that will go so well with a cup of tea or coffee. Bonus: It's just as delicious for breakfast, lunch, a snack, or dessert with a scoop or ice cream.

4. The Pioneer Woman's cinnamon rolls aka the best cinnamon rolls ever -- I have been looking forward to making these for weeks once Matt and I sorted out our Christmas day plans. I'm dreaming of a white Christmas... with a cup of hot chocolate and a plate of my favorite cinnamon rolls! :) BEST. EVER.

5. Quiche -- my all-time favorite breakfast for guests. You can personalize it any way you like, with peppers or mushrooms, broccoli or spinach, cheddar or Swiss... if you can think it, you can do it. Friends and guests have never met a quiche of mine that they didn't love, and they think I went to such effort to do it. Little do they know it's so incredibly easy!
Bonus: For a festive and non-alcoholic drink to start your morning, try my beloved famosa! Orange juice and diet ginger ale make such a fizzy and fun special occasion. Or, you know, champagne is always delicious, too, if you don't have to be family-friendly.
Happy entertaining and save travels if you are driving, flying, or going by sleigh :)
