A dentist's favorite time of year

Halloween is tomorrow! I hope I'm not the only one who misses trick-or-treating. Grown-up parties just aren't the same, so it's hard for me to muster up excitement for a fun costume (this year it's cop out #1 or cop out #2). I can clearly remember sitting at the kitchen table with my sister, counting and sorting our haul of sugar, and setting aside the "gross" candy (hard candy, black licorice, etc.) for my dad to take to work for his candy dish. Ha!

I'm curious to know what other people remember about childhood Halloweens. What was your favorite treat? Did you have any special family traditions? I'd love to hear!

Holy crap, I just started thinking about Sixlets... man alive... Happy Halloween :o)

  1. My favorite treat was (and still is) Twizzlers. I also remember getting a Whatchamacallit bar one year and it was the most disgusting thing I've had ever eaten and I haven't had one since. Also, unrelated to candy, my parents used to play scary music outside on a little radio and a lot of the younger kids would be scared to come trick-or-treating at our house because of it...stupid kids.

  2. Childhood memories are the best. Living in the country the houses were to far apart to fill our pillowcases but one neighbor would invite us in for spooky stories, homemade cider and fresh baked treats. It was not the commercial holiday of today but holds the best memories. Also I hated houses that gave pencils or religous material.

  3. @ Anonymous: Also apples. Who gives out apples?! I realize it's in the best interest of the children, but a - they don't want healthy food on Halloween, and b - their parents probably won't let their kids eat them anyway out of fear of hidden razor blades.

  4. I remember the first time I realized Halloween existed (I saw it on TV). I would sit by the door hoping we would have at least ONE trick or treater come that year (I don't know why I never wanted to go myself..) but usually no one did. Then one year a Non-Jewish family moved into the neighborhood and we got our first trick or treater! It was awesome! I love my sheltered Jewish community :)

  5. I always knew Halloween existed, however in my slighty-less sheltered Jewish community, I was always one of 4 children forced to go to Hebrew School if Halloween fell on that night. However, when we got to go out after, EVERYONE wanted to get rid of their candy at the end of the night. Jackpot!

  6. Crunch Bars, until I choked on little bits of crunchy pieces. Then Cadbury Eggs. Wait, that's Easter. Why must we wait until Jesus's resurrection anniversary to eat sugar-syrup filled chocolate eggs? I'm writing them a letter... (Not Jesus, but Cadbury.) :)

  7. But Jesus can make it happen too.
